Pride month calls for more than just awareness – it calls for action!
Did you know? In Mexico:
- 46% of students face job discrimination based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.
- 30% of LGBT+ individuals face discrimination by family members, in school, while using public transportation, in hospitals, and while walking in the streets.
- Between 30-40% of transgender individuals are denied housing
- The average life expectancy for a transgender woman is 35 years old
These harsh truths were among some of the topics discussed in the 2nd Annual Bi-National Summit in the San Diego/Tijuana region called, Orgullo Sin Fronteras. The summit was made possible by the sponsorship of the U.S Consulate in Tijuana in conjunction with the partnership of San Diego Pride.
The summit brought together organizations and activities from both sides of the border to discuss the issues of LBGT+ individuals in their communities. Keynote speaker, LGBT+ activist, and ICF ally, Enrique Torre Molina, passionately spoke about the reality of LGBT+ individuals and emphasized the importance of building bridges and creating strong networks (strength is found in numbers!).
ICF was invited to present a workshop on the fundamentals of fundraising. Attendees were given tools on how to better engage potential LGBT+ donors on both sides of the border. With 25% of the LGBT+ population making over $100K/year, learning how to engage these donors can have an organization going to from “drag” to “queen!” sooner rather than later.
